The Department of Internal Affairs (DIA) issued a formal warning to SkyCity casino. This was in relation to marketing done by the online casino to its existing customers. SkyCity casino had sent out an email to its loyalty programme customers informing that the online casino would be operating as per normal.

After investigating the matter, DIA issued a formal warning. DIA spokesperson Chris Thornborough did however concede that SkyCity did not intentionally breach the Gambling Act.

Thornborough said “So a formal warning is appropriate and proportionate. We expect SkyCity to exercise a high level of caution in future to avoid breaching the Act. The department will take any future breaches seriously.”

A representative from SkyCity had the following to say in reply to the formal warning “The purpose of the email was to advise customers of the overall impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic on SkyCity’s operations and SkyCity believes that it did not contravene the provisions of the Gambling Act. SkyCity respects the view of the department however and will take into account the feedback received.”
